Sometimes a problem feels like one enormous thing because your brain has given the whole pile one name.

  • “Dating.”

  • “My job.”

  • “Our relationship.”

  • “My life.”

  • “Safety.”

But one name can contain a lot of different machinery.

A quick way to make the problem smaller is to ask:

What is already hiding inside this thing?

Three easy places to look:

  • Dimensions: What different qualities or parts have been bundled together?

  • Actors: Who is doing what? Who is affected?

  • Time: Does the problem change depending on when you look at it?

You do not need to use all three.

You don't even need to know which one is best.

Pick the cut that makes the problem easier to hold.

The next three lessons will show you how.
