Where to Cut
Sometimes knowing what is inside a problem is enough.
Sometimes it isn’t.
You can identify all the parts and still have no idea why the machine keeps producing the same result.
That is when it helps to stop asking only:
What is in this?
and start asking:
What is this doing?
There are three useful cuts here:
Cut by Stage: Where in the sequence is the problem happening?
Cut by Mechanism: What is causing what?
Cut by Evidence: What actually happened, and what did you infer from it?
These cuts are useful when you already know the pieces but still cannot see the process connecting them.
You do not need all three.
Pick the one that makes the machinery easier to see.
